1. 100-year-old swears by Nintendo for brain health

    Thursday, February 02, 2012

Kathleen Connell may have just turned 100, but she doesn’t feel a day over 80. Her brain is even younger - one of her video games scored her mental age as 64 years old, The Telegraph reports.

Connell attributes her optimal brain health to her Nintendo DS, a hand-held video gaming device on which she plays about a dozen games, from Scrabble to Family Fortunes.

“It’s absolutely super, I can’t speak highly enough of it. I don’t know what I would do without it,” she told the news outlet. “I’ll play it in the evening, then I’ll have a break and a cup of tea, then I’ll go back to playing my Nintendo.”

The UK native is not the only senior benefiting from video games, and Nintendo’s DS is not the only device that stimulates the brain. ABC News reports that a 2009 study at North Carolina State University found that because seniors did not grow up with these technologies, learning the new skill is helpful in stimulating the brain.

Turned off the 360 about a minute later and didn’t play for the rest of the night. Parenthood is terrifying. Guess this means I’m not ready, even virtually.
